Yemeni president ratifies law for presidential elections
Yemen, Politics, 4/20/1999
Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh ratified yesterday a new law to adjust provisions of an election law that includes organizing requests and procedures for nomination for the Yemeni presidential elections, which are to be held in October.
Issuing this law comes after the parliamentary council gave its consent for the adjustments in a session last week.
The adjustments call for electing a president for the republic directly by the people in multi-candidate and free elections on the condition that candidates be recommended by 10% of the members of the parliamentary council, as well as for allowing holding debates among the competitors.
The adjustments specify the financial aid that can be obtained by the candidate from the state, donations and aid on the condition that candidates cannot receive support from any foreign parties.
