Sudan-Eritrea, Politics, 4/20/1999
Eritrea's President Assyas Afworki has asserted that his meeting with Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir resulted in reaching a Sudanese -Eritrean understanding to eliminate all causes behind disputes and to restore relations, severed between the two countries since 1994.
Afworki explained on Monday in press statements in Asmara that the meeting was held at the initiative of Libyan leader Col. Moammar Gaddafi with the objective of "backing exerted efforts to settle the Eritrean - Sudanese disputes."
He explained that the Libyan initiative "supports the agreement which was reached at a mediation from Qatar."
Afworki continued that it was agreed to coordinate the efforts of both Libya and Qatar and to convene a meeting between the foreign ministers of Sudan and Eritrea in the presence of the foreign ministers of Qatar and Libya in order to "discuss reasons behind the conflict and then restore relations into normalcy."
