Syrian PNF reviews current developments
Syria, Politics, 4/20/1999

Chaired by in Syrian Vice President Muhammad Zuheir Masharqa, the central leadership of the Progressive National Front (PNF) on Monday held a meeting. The participants in the meeting discussed a comprehensive report submitted by Foreign Minister Farouk al-Sharaa on a number of issues relating to the conditions in the Arab region and on the international arenas.

They reviewed the latest political developments in the region, especially the Middle East peace process which they said is obstructed by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's policies, based on disregarding all international values and norms, Security Council resolutions and the Madrid terms of reference, especially the land-for-peace formula.

The Syrian PNF viewed these Israeli policies as deliberate attempts made to undermine any chances for establishing a just and comprehensive Middle East peace. The PNF dealt with Netanyahu's bid to change Israel's occupation of south Lebanon into a card game used in his election maneuvers.

The leadership asserted the inseparability of the Syrian-Lebanese peace tracks, and the importance of preventing Israel from making attempts to single out peace parties and to impose its own hegemony.

Members of the PNF discussed proposals made by Israel's representative at the recent European - Mediterranean conference held in Stuttgart, stressing that those proposals are part of ill-founded attempts to circumvent substantial issues and an open disregard of the established fact that settling those issues is the key to materializing peace and security in the region.

The PNF officials made it crystal clear that as Syria is committed to peace, which is based on the "land for peace" principle, such peace is impossible without Israel's withdrawal from the Golan Heights and south Lebanon.

The PNF also reviewed the current Arab situation, reaffirming that a constructive pan-Arab solidarity is the sharpest weapon which is fit for standing firm against all forms of challenges and for protecting Arab interests and their future.
