Report: Netanyahu plans electoral surprises
Regional-Israel, Politics, 4/20/1999
The Jordanian weekly al-Majd said in a special report from Cairo that European diplomatic sources warned of one surprise or more that Israeli Premier Benjamin Netanyahu is preparing to launch on the eve of the forthcoming Israeli elections with the objective of change the balance in his favor and that of his party.
The paper quoted a well-informed source at the Arab League as saying that more than one Arab country had recently received reports from European diplomatic sources which seek for Netanyahu and his party to lose the May elections in Israel, saying that Netanyahu asked "the Israeli security to carry out assassination operations and physical liquidation against leaders of the Palestinian and Lebanese resistance during what is called the last quarter of the hour."
The source indicated that the timing of carrying out this operation will be very close to the day of the Israeli elections so Netanyahu will be able to give Israeli public opinion a sense of victory and thereby win the elections as a result.
The source asserted that the European circles asked certain Arab states to warn leaders of the Lebanese and Palestinian resistance of "Netanyahu's surprises" and to recommend that those leaders take strong security measures during the time left before the Israeli election day.
