Gulf summit to be held shortly
Gulf, Politics, 4/20/1999
Press sources in the Gulf region said that leaders of the Arab Gulf states will convene a one-day meeting in Saudi Arabia to discuss political and economic developments in the region.
Media sources in the Gulf Cooperation Council's six member states said the leaders of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman and the United Arab Emirates will meet in Riyadh in the middle of May.
In their most recent meeting in December, 1998, GCC leaders agreed to convene their summit meetings twice a year instead of once as had been the situation since the establishment of the GCC in 1981.
The decrease in the world oil prices and warnings expressed by Saudi Arabia that economic problems OPEC suffered from in 1998 constituted a real crisis debated in the GCC's 1998 summit.
The leaders will also discuss problems concerning Iraq, Iran and other international issues with which leaders of these countries are concerned.
