Regional, Politics, 4/19/1999

The permanent Bureau of the Arab Lawyers Union voiced full-backing to Morocco's territorial integrity and legitimate right to exercise its sovereignty in its southern provinces, support for Lebanese resistance against Israel, and removal of the sanctions against Iraq, and defending accused Libyans.

At the end of their meeting held over the weekend in Morocco, the Arab lawyers hailed the progress made by the Kingdom in matters of human rights and democracy. They also expressed support to Morocco's efforts to retrieve its northern cities of Sebta, Mellilia and neighboring Islands which are still controlled by Spain.

The Arab lawyers termed as positive the suspension of the UN embargo imposed on Libya and designated a group of lawyers for the defense of the two Libyan suspects who were handed over lately to the Netherlands for trial for alleged involvement in the bombing of the Pan-Am plane in 1988.

They also voiced solidarity with Iraqi people facing American-British "aggression" and urged the Arab states to lift the embargo imposed on Iraq.

The Arab lawyers denounced the latest occupation by Israel of the Lebanese village of "Arnoun" and invited Arab states to back the Lebanese resistance movement.

Regarding the Palestinian cause, the Arab lawyers renewed their backing to the Palestinians' legitimate struggle for the establishment of their independent state with Al-quds (Jerusalem) as its capital.

Also, the union decided lately here to designate a team of barristers for the defense of the two Libyan men standing trial in the Netherlands by Scottish magistrates.
