Algeria: Al-Ibrahimi announces founding of a new political party
Algeria, Politics, 4/19/1999
The Egyptian newspaper Al-Ahram reported today that Ahmed Taleb El-Ibrahim, one of the Algerian candidates who withdrew from the presidential elections in which former Foreign Minister Abdul Aziz Bouteflika was elected president, is seriously attempting to establish a new party that will include the people and forces who supported him during his campaign for the presidency, especially the banned Islamic Salvation Front.
Informed sources said that some members of the Peaceful Society Movement who oppose Sheikh Mahfouz Nahnah may join this expected party after their refusal to nominate Nahnah.
Al-Ahram newspaper quoted sources close to former Prime Minister Maloud Hamroush, who also withdrew from the elections, as saying that he is currently attempting to establish a new party under the name of the Movement for Reform and Change.
Change was the slogan of Hamroush through his electoral campaign.
