Yemen, Iran for closer cooperation

During his talks with Yemeni Foreign Minister Abdul Qader Bajmal, Iranian President Muhammad Khatami on Sunday called for regional cooperation in order to ensure security and stability in the Gulf region.

He added that there is no other solution but to maintain cooperation among the countries of this region to establish security and stability in the Gulf area and that differences in viewpoints should not be converted into conflicts.

He criticized the presence of foreign troops in the region, adding that the Gulf states have to extend to each other a helping hand to ensure a better future. The Yemeni president delivered the Iranian president a message from Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh.

He called for strengthening relations between the two countries. He said that his country is in need of "Iran's help to strengthen basis of civil society and establishing basis for civil society and establishing democracy in Yemen."

On Sunday, Bajmal arrived in Iran for an official three-day visit. In an arrival statement, Bajmal said he will discuss during his visit with Iranian officials bilateral cooperation relations in the framework of the joint committee and means of reactivating trade exchange between the two countries and regional and international issues of mutual concern.

Bajmal asserted that he will also discuss the date of the visit the Yemeni president will hold to Iran at the invitation of Iranian President Muhammad Khatami.
