Report: Issue of Jordanian detainees to be settled in Syria
Syria-Jordan, Politics, 4/19/1999
The Lebanese weekly al-Osbo al-Arabi said in its most recent issue that the special issue of the Jordanian detainees in Syrian prisons will be sorted out. The magazine added that the Syrian government showed great understanding to this issue and that there are indications of reaching an acceptable solution formula.
The magazine added that on the other part of the story, "there is the issue of the Syrian Muslim Brotherhood, especially the group who resides in the Jordanian capital, Amman," noting that Damascus shows great unease concerning statements by some of those Muslim Brotherhood members.
The weekly added that according to information it received the Jordanian government asked leaders of the Muslim Brotherhood group in Syria, who live in Jordan not to make any statements that are of bad inclination to Syria, a matter which was viewed as a sort of easing the atmospheres between the two countries in preparation for the important step in setting back relations to their correct status, appointing a Syrian ambassador in Amman and completing measures provided for accrediting the Jordanian ambassador in Damascus.
The magazine added that the forthcoming Syrian - Jordanian summit will discuss several economic and political topics.
