Round of Sudan peace talks coming in Kenya
Sudan-Kenya, Politics, 4/17/1999

Representatives of the Sudanese government and the Sudan People's Liberation Army are starting a new round of negotiations and peace talks in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya.

Officials in Nairobi said these talks will be held under the auspices of the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD), currently headed by Kenya, adding that the talks will last until April 25.

Sudan's ambassador to Cairo, Ahmed Abd El-Haleem told ArabicNews.com that the meetings will include many topics, topped by bringing back the bodies of the four Sudanese persons working with a rescue group affiliated to the Red Cross who were killed in early April while being held by rebel elements.

Abd El-Haleem said the Sudanese opposition has a hidden agenda and that it receives support from foreign countries aimed at establishing a state in the south, which is rejected by the south itself.

On the other hand, Sudanese Foreign Minister Mustafa Othman Ismael urged Egypt to move to support Sudan's stability and confront foreign conspiracies which threaten Sudan's security and unity.

Othman Ismael also said Egypt has and still plays a major role in Sudanese national reconciliation and the Sudanese government approves of it.

Egypt and Libya are making mediation between Sudan and the opposition.
