Egyptian Mufti, Pope Shenuda: transplanting organs not forbidden
Egypt, Religion, 4/17/1999
Both Egypt's Mufti and Pope Shenuda of Alexandria have agreed that transplanting human organs is not forbidden, as all religions have agreed that transplanting organs from living or dead people is legal, on the condition that this operation should be done in cases of rescue and will not cause any harm or weakness to the donor or prevent him from living his life properly.
Moreover Pope Shenuda and the Mufti said that transplanting organs from people who are still alive is equivalent in acceptable circumstances to organs transplanted from dead bodies, pointing out that clinical death and whole death are something left to the doctor and his conscience, thus the Sharia or the Islamic law is always committed to the moral side.
Meanwhile Pope Shenuda pointed out that there is no difference between the Islamic and Christian religions in this respect.
He also confirmed the church's commitment to what was decided by the government in this concern, pointing out that the government adopts all that the three religions dictate.
