Morocco's government, employers and trade unions agree to promote employment and low-cost lodgings
Morocco, Politics, 4/17/1999

The Moroccan government, employers and major trade unions agreed Friday here to promote employment, low-cost lodgings and create the appropriate atmosphere for the encouragement of investment.

At the end of a 1st round meeting held in Rabat, Moroccan minister of social development, solidarity, employment and vocational training, Khalid Alioua, said the three socioeconomic partners also agreed to set up a national commission to follow-up the implementation of the decisions agreed upon, mainly regarding the creation of jobs for young graduates, the respect of trade union freedom, the extension of social welfare coverage and encouragement of low-cost lodging projects.

The government will allocate around $ 77 Mln for the creation of an employment agency and will devote 2 % of its investment budget to the building of low-cost lodgings, Alioua, who is also spokesman for the government, said.

The cabinet equally decided a 500 DH (around $ 51) increase in retirement pensions and the reintegration of a number of dismissed civil servants.

For its part, the Private sector decided to contribute 3 % of its net profit to housing projects, the Moroccan minister said.

Alioua renewed the Moroccan government commitment to carry on dialogue with all involved socioeconomic partners, protect trade union freedom and settle all pending social issues.
