Monitors to meet on Arnoun
Lebanon-Israel, Politics, 4/17/1999
US State Department spokesman James Rubin said yesterday that the April Understanding Monitoring Committee will meet on Monday to address complaints that have been filed regarding the Lebanese town of Arnoun, which Israel took over yesterday. The town was occupied by Israel for a short time earlier this year, but Lebanese students dismantled the fences that had been erected to block off the town.
He said that events in Arnoun "in addition to the movement of Israeli and SLA troops into the village, have included placement by Hizbullah of roadside bombs in the vicinity of Arnoun. We believe it is in the interest of all parties to avoid escalation or provocative acts, and we urge all sides to respect the April Understandings and to exercise maximum restraint."
