Al-Sharaa address at the European -Mediterranean conference
Regional-International, Politics, 4/16/1999

The Euro-Mediterranean conference in Stuttgart, Germany on Thursday started it deliberations. It was mainly characterized by Libya's presence, which had been prohibited during the past years due to UN sanctions which are now suspended.

In his capacity as chairman of the Arab group to the conference, Syrian Foreign Minister Farouk al-Sharaa reviewed what has been achieved since the launching of the Barcelona conference and reiterated Syria's position regarding peace settlement.

He added that genuine peace is a must and a need for all. He called for eliminating the phenomenon of terrorism, "highlighting" that people's right to resist foreign occupation is an unswerving right.

The Syrian foreign minister said, "What we have witnessed of a human catastrophe reminds us of what had taking place for thousands of Arabs of Palestinians, Syrians and Lebanese who had been expelled from their homes and lands through successive waves of forced migration during the past 50 years."

Al-Sharaa added that history repeats itself in the Middle East and Central Europe. "It does not seem to us, in the short run, that conditions are proceeding towards the better just with the exception of the development in the industry of weapons, means of killing, destruction and deportation."
