Saleh calls for convening an Arab summit soon
Yemen-Regional, Politics, 4/15/1999

Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh said today that there are communications with the United Arab Emirates, Egypt and Arab rulers to convene an Arab summit, expressing optimism over the likelihood of convening a summit during the coming three months in Cairo at the main headquarters of the Arab League, especially after the Israeli elections.

The Yemeni president said in an interview published yesterday by the United Arab Emirates newspaper al-Khaleej that relations between his country and countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council are good and developing continuously and that there are no disputes with Gulf states.

He added, "Yemen is a present and existed country in the Arab area whether inside or outside the Gulf Cooperation Council," in reference to questions regarding Yemen joining the council.

President Saleh stated that Yemen did not support the Iraqi invasion of Kuwaiti, but condemned it and asked for an Arab solution to the problems resulting from the Iraqi invasion.

He called for solving border problems among "brothers and neighbors" with understanding on the basis of doing no harm to anyone, referring to Yemen's understanding regarding borders with Oman and solving the conflict with Eritrea regarding Hanish Island.

The Yemeni president expressed his belief that forces opposing the Arab nations, topped by Israel, play a major role directly and indirectly in keeping the Arab disputes alive to apply the principle of "divide and conquer."
