Declaring Port Sudan a military operations zone
Sudan, Politics, 4/15/1999

The Sudanese opposition escalated its military operations and said that Khartoum - Port Sudan road on the Red Sea has become a military operations zone.

The joint leadership of the opposition Democratic National Alliance said it has decided to escalate operations on the Khartoum - Port Sudan road.

This road is nearly 1,500 kilometers long and is a vital link between Sudan's central and eastern governorates to Khartoum as it is also the main link to Sudan's main harbor, through which all imports and exports pass to the capital.

The statement added that the military leadership of the assembly, which comprises the southern and the northern opposition parties urges Sudanese citizens, companies and corporations which use this route to stop using it to avoid losses in people and property.

Abd El-Rahman Saiid, the spokesman of the military joint leadership of the opposition forces, stated that the decision was made and there would be no retreat.
