Arafat heads for China

Palestinian President Yasser Arafat stopped in Saudi Arabia on Wednesday on his way to China for an official visit to win international support for announcing the Palestinian state.

Palestinian sources told the London-based al-Hayat daily that President Arafat will visit Saudi Arabia after he finishes his visits to other countries in order to acquaint the Saudi officials with results of these visits.

The sources added that the Palestinian authority must cling to consultations with the Saudi leaders on any stand that arises, due to Saudi Arabia's remarkable position in the Arab and international arenas.

The Palestinian sources continued that the date set for the declaration of the Palestinian state is May 4 and that if any postponement is to be made there will be guarantees for such a postponement.

The Palestinian sources indicated that the Palestinian president found during his previous visits to friendly and Arab states all support and backing for the Palestinian state and that these already-visited countries stressed that peace, security and stability in the region is an international demand before a regional demand.

In Gaza, the Qatar News Agency said that Arafat briefed the Palestinian leadership on the results of his meetings with leaders of the countries he visited during his recent tour.

Voice of Palestine radio said on Wednesday that Arafat will discuss with the Chinese leaders the declaration of the Palestinian state on May 4 and the Chinese support for the Palestinian people.
