President al-Assad's visit to Moscow postponed

President of the United Arab Emirates UAE Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan al-Nahyan on Sunday in Abu Dhabi received the Jordanian King Abdullah Bin al-Hussein. Go

Moroccan Crown Prince Sidi Mohammed and Princess Lalla Meriem started on Sunday a visit to France where they will dedicate a series of events, held part of the Moroccan year-long festival "Le Temps du Maroc en France." On Tuesday, the crown prince and French president, Jacques Chirac, will dedicate a four month-long exhibition dubbed "Morocco, treasuries of the Kingdom" (Maroc, Tresors du Royaume) to be held in "Le Petit Palais," one of the most prestigious arts galleries of the French capital. Syrian President Hafez al-Assad on Saturday received a message from British Prime Minister Tony Blair. The message was delivered to Syrian Foreign Minister Farouk al-Sharaa during his meeting on Saturday in Damascus with member of the British Upper House Lord Michael Levy, who is also the special envoy for the British prime minister. The London-based Middle East daily quoted its correspondent in Amman as saying that Syria and Jordan have agreed to postpone the visit of Jordan's King Abdullah Bin al-Hussein to Syria from the middle of this month until the end of it, in light of the busy schedule of several Syrian officials. Go

Egypt and South Korea on Sunday signed an agreement for developing and modernizing the Egyptian naval arsenal and updating it to repair ships in the world market. The agreement also provides for involving the Alexandria naval arsenal and South Korean Daewoo company to develop and update the naval arsenal, said the Korean news agency. The agreement was signed by Egyptian Prime Minister Kamal al-Ganzouri and his South Korean counterpart, Kim Chong-pil. Go

Military officials said in Turkey on Sunday that Turkish security forces killed 44 armed Kurds while 8 members of the Turkish armed forces were killed in a large attack launched by the Turkish forces in northern Iraq. The Turkish officials added that a force of some 5,000 Turkish soldiers, backed by air support from helicopters and F-16 jet fighters, took part in the attack which started on Saturday night. A Turkish military official said this operation will continue until its objectives are achieved. Go

The Jordanian daily has quoted well-informed sources in Amman as saying that the Syrian Foreign Minister Farouk al-Sharaa' will hold an official visit to Jordan before the end of the current month, April. The paper also quoted these sources as saying that al-Sharaa had to have visited Amman last Thursday but the visit has postponed because of his busy schedules. The paper sources indicate that the aim of al-Sharaa' visit is to prepare for the visit to be held to Damascus shortly, by King Abdullah Bin al-Hussein. Go

Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud al-Faisal starts a two-day visit to Iran today to discuss with Iranian officials oil issues and areas of cooperation between Saudi Arabia and Iran. The Iranian News Agency, IRNA, said the visit is part of regular contacts between the two countries. Go

Speaker of the Syrian People's Assembly (parliament) Abdul Qader Qaddoura arrived in Brussels on Saturday night to take part in the deliberations of the 101st conference of the International Parliamentary Union (IPU). Go

The Egyptian government decided to present new facilities to Egyptians abroad who desire to open branches of their companies inside Egypt, to be made through embassies and consulates, and that the consent of the specialized ministers must be granted in the field of the company's work and documents must be presented that include the company's contract, copies of cards of the participants in it and the basic financial system of the mother company. Newsmen and Technicians of the Moroccan public TV-Radio (RTM) will stage on Wednesday a sit-in to protest poor work and financial situation. It will be the 2nd protest movement of the RTM workers in less than three weeks. An amount of the poisonous material called Cotnion-Methyl, an insecticide, leaked on Sunday at a site for poisonous waste at Ramat Hovev in Negev. Israel Radio quoted sources at the Israeli Ministry of the Environment as saying that the amount of the material that leaked is relatively little and that the incident will not affect the environment greatly. Israeli Foreign Minister Ariel Sharon arrived in Moscow on Sunday from Washington in order to meet with Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov.
