Morocco to host next G-77 ministerial conference in September
Regional-Morocco, Economics, 4/9/1999
Morocco will host next September the 9th ministerial conference of the Group of 77 to finalize agenda of the 10th UN Conference on Trade and Development.
The decision was made at the end of the 26th annual meeting of the Chairmen/Coordinators of the Chapters of the Group of 77 at various United Nations centers.
The chapters' meeting, held in Geneva April 6-8 reviewed several issues dealing with development financing. Participants also discussed preparations for the next UNCTAD venues as well as the future role of the United Nations and ways to improve the working methods, actions and coordination between the G-77 members.
The Group of 77 was established on 15 June 1964 by seventy-seven developing countries, signatories of the "Joint Declaration of the Seventy-Seven Countries," issued at the end of the first session of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) in Geneva. Although the membership of the G- 77 has increased to 133 countries, the original name was retained because of its historic significance.
The Group -- which has become the largest Third World coalition in the United Nations -- provides the means for the developing world to articulate and promote its collective economic interests and enhance its joint negotiating capacity on all major international economic issues in the United Nations system, and promote economic and technical cooperation among developing countries (ECDC/TCDC).
The Group of 77, which advocates the establishment of a more equitable international economic order, partnership and development, extends financial assistance to South-South cooperation projects.
