New parliamentary bloc established in Sudan
Sudan, Politics, 4/9/1999
The Sudanese daily al-Rai al-Am said that some 20 Sudanese Parliamentarians have formed an independent parliamentary bloc to pressure the government and the opposition in order to achieve reconciliation.
The Sudanese daily quoted the parliament member representing Neyala in the province of Darfour, 900 km west of Khartoum, Ali Hussein Dousa, as saying that he had formed a parliamentary bloc together with 16 of his colleagues.
He explained that he will coordinate his move with "separatists" from the opposition parties which are the Nation's Party, and the Democratic Federation Party as well as the United Democratic Salvation Front, led by Reyak Mashar, which had an official licensing in the context of the party pluralism which was adopted in Sudan in January this year.
Dousa added, "Our group will pressure until an initiative will be launched by the parliament to achieve national reconciliation and to bring views together between the opposition and the government."
Sources at the Sudanese national council say that this initiative has created a crisis in the lines of the ruling National Congress party in Sudan because several parliamentarians in this party support the establishment of this bloc while others oppose it.
Parliament member Muhammad Ahmad al-Faddoul from the ruling party demanded that the parliamentarians who joined this bloc resign from the Nation's Council because they were elected on the list of the National Congress.
On the other side, the council's deputy chairman, Abdul Aziz Shaddou, in statements to Sudanese dailies issued on Thursday said that it is the right of the parliament members to establish a bloc, independent from the national conference.
