Lebanese-Palestinian follow-up committee to solve refugee problem
Lebanon-Palestine, Politics, 4/9/1999
Palestinian-Lebanese talks concerning problems facing the Palestinian refugees in the Lebanese camps and means of eliminating these problems were resumed.
Member of the PLO executive committee and the official in charge of the refugee issue, Asaad Abdul Rahman, arrived in Beirut to follow up on talks he had held in mid-March.
On Tuesday, Abdul Rahman held a meeting with Lebanese Minister of Telecommunications Issam Nu'man. Abdul Rahman described the talks as "very positive."
In statements to reporters in Beirut on Tuesday Abdul Rahman added that discussions dealt with studies, research and memorandums submitted by the Palestinian side and that the general framework was defined in order to revitalize Palestinian-Lebanese relations, especially the question of the refugees in particular.
Abdul Rahman added that appropriate mechanism was set on the grounds of rejecting "settling the Palestinians in Lebanon and taking into accounts human rights charters in regard to the life of the refugees."
However, a Palestinian-Lebanese follow-up committee was established. It includes officials and experts in the Palestinian affairs department at the Lebanese Foreign Ministry led by the department's director, Khalil Shatwi, and representatives for the refugees affairs department at the PLO.
