Moroccan league for Islamic minorities' defense calls NATO to undertake ground operations in Kosovo
Morocco-Yugoslavia, Politics, 4/8/1999
The Moroccan league for the defense of Islamic Minorities urged NATO to reconsider its military strategy and undertake urgent ground operations to evacuate from Kosovo extermination gangs, protect civilians and arm them so that they can defend themselves.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the League's coordination committee calls all peoples of the world who are against injustice, extremism and extermination to act up for the defense of the Kosovar people against genocide and to support their sovereignty and freedom.
A similar appeal was launched to all Muslim peoples and governments to extend to their Kosovar brethren financial assistance, weapons and volunteers to help them return to their country and defend their children and property.
The committee further calls humanitarian organizations to help the Kosovar people and to open a volunteer list for people wishing to rescue the Kosovars.
"Crimes of this nature, that are happening for the first time since the Middle Ages and that are carried out in total impunity will lead to the loss of trust among Muslim people and Europe that claims to defend human rights, multi-cultures, religious freedom and tolerance," the statement deplored.
In Geneva, the Coordination committee on Kosovo, stemming from the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC), held on Wednesday a meeting and decided to set up a group to coordinate the OIC assistance to Kosovo.
Iranian Foreign Minister Kamal Kharazani, whose country is currently is currently holding the Organization of the Islamic Conference's chairmanship, said Kosovars must be allowed to freely determine their political future. He also condemned the policy of ethnic cleansing perpetrated by the Serb authorities against Albanian Kosovars.
Following the meeting of the OIC coordination committee, the head of the Iranian diplomacy demanded an immediate halt to all repressive actions undertaken by the Serb authorities and the immediate withdrawal of Serb military and paramilitary from Kosovo.
The committee, comprising Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Malaysia, Bosnia, Egypt and Iran, also called Serbs to sign the Rambouillet agreements and pledged to contribute to the international monitoring and peacekeeping operations.
It was further announced that aid from Islamic countries has started to arrive in Albania and Macedonia.
