Founding a new bloc for East African countries for stability and commerce
Egypt-Regional, Economics, 4/8/1999

Egyptian diplomacy is currently pursuing activity to found an economic bloc for the countries of East Africa: Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda.

An Egyptian diplomatic source told ArabicNews.com that the target of this bloc is to upgrade trade and economic cooperation between the group's countries despite the political and border disputes between some of these countries.

The sources added that Cairo received the approval of Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya to found this bloc, while Addis Ababa, Khartoum and Asmara have kept silent till now.

The Egyptian government drafted a plan since the middle of last year to cooperate with different regional blocs such as the Asian assemblage, COMESA, the North African Union, the Group of 15, and the Group of 77.
