UN to continue its mission on the borders between Iraq, Kuwait
Iraq-Kuwait-UN, Politics, 4/8/1999

The UN Security Council on Tuesday issued its ordinary consent to continue the tasks of the UN mission which monitors the demilitarized zone on the border between Iraq and Kuwait, the United Nations Iraq-Kuwait Observation Mission (UNIKOM).

Chairman of the UN Security Council Allan Demaje told journalists following closed-door consultations that he will send a message to UN Secretary General Kofi Annan that complies with his own recommendation in a report he released recently on how the UN mission should proceed with its work.

In his report which covers the period from September 24, 1998 until March 23, 1999, the UN chief said the situation in the demilitarized zone is calm in general, despite the US and British air raids against Iraqi targets in the middle of December 1998 and the later confrontation because of the two no-fly zones in the northern and southern parts of Iraq which affected certain aspects of the operations conducted by the monitoring mission.

The team was established following the Gulf war in 1991. It includes some 1,300 soldiers and military observers and other recruited staff members.
