Egypt plans to build tunnel under Suez Canal
Egypt, Economics, 4/7/1999

Egypt said it is projecting to build a tunnel under the Suez canal, for an investment of us$ 330 million, to service an industrial area of the Tafria port.

According to Egyptian transports minister, Soulaiman Metouali, Egypt has already received ten bids from international firms for the building of the 10-meter wide and 1,879 meter-long tunnel. He projected works to last between three to four years.

The tunnel to be located at some 20 km south of the city of Port-Said (220 km northeast of Cairo) will be built at a 90-square kilometer industrial area that is being constructed for a total cost of us$ 282 million. The industrial area will accommodate 200 plants specialized in electronic, steel, car and petrochemical industries, including the first Egyptian fertilizer company.

The Egyptian official said investors operating in the industrial area and the company selected for the tunnel building will bear at equal shares the construction cost
