Russia condemns US-UK raids against Iraqi oil facilities
Iraq-Russia, Politics, 4/7/1999
Russia condemned US-British raids against Iraqi oil facilities as "a breach to international law," according to a statement of the Russian foreign ministry released Tuesday.
"It is absolutely revolting" that the raids destroy oil pumping plants used to export Iraqi oil under the UN oil-for-food program, said the statement which notes that these military operations are depriving Iraqi populations from foodstuffs, MAP reported.
Quoting observers, the Russian foreign department warned that the situation in Iraq is on the edge of a "humanitarian tragedy," if the USA and Britain do not stop raids and examine a political solution to the crisis, leading to a partial lifting of the embargo enforced for almost nine years now against the country.
