Arab parliamentary delegation wraps up solidarity visit to Baghdad
Iraq, Politics, 4/7/1999
An Arab parliamentary delegation, led by Moroccan MP Brahim Rachidi, wrapped up on Tuesday a three-day visit to Baghdad, meant to express the solidarity of Arab parliaments with Iraq.
The delegation of Arab law-makers held a series of meetings with Iraqi officials and representatives, mainly vice-president Taha Yassine Ramadan, speaker of the Iraqi parliament Saadoune Hammadi, vice-premier Tarek Aziz and chairman of the parliamentary committee of Arab and foreign affairs, Khaled Chihab.
In addition to Baghdad, the delegation also visited the city of Basra where they saw on the spot damages caused by US-British air raids and found out that the raids target civilian aims.
During the talks held in Baghdad, the head of the delegation, who is sixth vice-speaker of the Moroccan house of representatives, renewed the Arab parliaments' solidarity with Iraqis and support to Iraq in the defense of its territorial integrity and sovereignty. They also expressed rejection of all forms of interference in the Arab country's internal affairs and called for the lifting of the international embargo which has been enforced against Iraq for more than 8 years.
The mission was decided by the Arab Parliamentary Union's meeting in Amman last December.
