Morocco denounces Serbs ethnic cleansing policy in Kosovo
Morocco, Politics, 4/7/1999

The Moroccan government denounced on Tuesday the "ethnic cleansing" policy practiced by the Serbs against civilians in Kosovo.

Khalid Alioua, spokesman of the government, said Tuesday following a cabinet meeting that the government is examining the possibility of sending a humanitarian assistance to Kosovar refugees in neighboring countries.

After he called for mobilization of the civil society and humanitarian associations in Morocco, Alioua, minister of social development, employment and vocational training, said Morocco supports efforts by international organizations to enable the Kosovar people live "in security" and enjoy their rights over their territory, hoping that "a peaceful settlement" will be reached in the region.

According to latest figures of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, almost 450,000 Kosovars have taken refuge in Macedonia and Albania, 35,700 in Montenegro, 7,900 in Bosnia-Hercegovina and 6,000 in Turkey.

Over the week end, Moroccan political parties grouped in the "Koutla"-- Arabic name for bloc-- expressed solidarity with the Kosovar people who are victim of an ethnic cleansing policy.

The four Koutla parties, former opposition parties, are the Socialist Union of Popular forces (USFP), the Istiqlal Party (PI), the Organization of Democratic and Popular Action (OADP), and the Party for Progress and Socialism (PPS). The USFP, the PI and the PPS are now participating in the left-center coalition government.
