Delegation from U.S. Congress in Morocco
Morocco-USA, Politics, 4/3/1999

A delegation from the U.S Congress started this Saturday a four-day visit to Morocco.

Head of the delegation, chairman of the trade committee at the house of representatives told reporters upon arrival that the Congressional delegation has come to Morocco to renew recognition of Morocco and King Hassan II for their efforts in favor of peace and stability in the region and to recall to that Morocco was the first country to recognize the independence of the United States.

He recalled that first treaty of friendship and cooperation the United States sealed with a foreign country was the one with Morocco.

The 13-member delegation that includes republicans and democrats will confer with several Moroccan officials on means of upgrading trade exchange between the two countries.

Last week 110 US congressmen set up the caucus, "Friends of Morocco in the United States Congress."

On Thursday, the Moroccan chamber of advisors (upper chamber of the Moroccan parliament) also set up a Moroccan-US friendship group.

Last July, a group of 92 US senators and representatives had sent a letter to US chief executive, Bill Clinton, urging him "to undertake all appropriate steps to strengthen American-Moroccan cooperation" on the basis of shared values and interests, in view of the close link existing between stability, security and economic development.

Clinton had responded in a letter to the congressmen that the two countries share a common resolve to advance peace, stability, prosperity and democracy.

The U.S administration had also backed in August the congress call and asserted it supports strong U.S-Moroccan relations.
