Mauritanian opposition leader renews call to investigate Israeli waste
Mauritania, Judicial, 4/2/1999

The leader of Mauritanian opposition, Ahmed Ould Daddah, renewed his call to investigate his allegations that the authorities in Nouakchott allowed Israel to bury nuclear waste in the Mauritanian Sahara.

The call came one day after a judgment was issued by the criminal court in Nouakchott declaring one of his assistants innocent on a charge of sparking violence due to a broad campaign he held to investigate the alleged burial of the wastes and to criticism of the Mauritanian authorities in this concern.

Meanwhile, the court said the accused was innocent of exploiting the allegations concerning Israeli waste to threaten the general security, although the Mauritanian authorities resorted to legally-prohibited methods such as presenting the record of phone calls between the leader of Mauritanian opposition and a journalist.

Ahmed Ould Daddah said he considered the court's judgment "back to the right," yet he returned to the subject for which he was tried, renewing the call to investigate the reports of the Mauritanian authorities allowing Israeli to bury nuclear waste in the Mauritanian Sahara.
