Morocco states guidelines for Moroccan nuclear desalination project in Vienna
Morocco, Economics, 4/1/1999
Morocco has expounded on the guidelines of the nuclear desalination plant it is projecting to build in Tan Tan, southern Morocco, in cooperation with China.
Morocco's ambassador to Austria, Abderrahim Benmoussa, told the governors' council of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) that was meeting in Vienna that Morocco and China concluded last December an accord providing for the construction of a nuclear reactor for sea water desalination in Tan Tan. The project will be carried out in cooperation with the IAEA, he added.
He recalled that Morocco had requested the IAEA secretariat general to supply to all interested parties all the information they require, to evidence that the project will be carried out in total transparency and without any negative impact on the neighboring environment
The project will supply potable water to more than 70,000 persons, he said, adding that, if successful, similar projects should be carried out in other parts of Morocco and in other countries.
The accord on the nuclear reactor that was concluded on the occasion of the official visit Moroccan Premier Abderrahmane Youssoufi paid to China last December, crowns technical studies launched two years ago on water desalination in the southern town of Tan Tan.
The 10-mw reactor will produce 8,000 cubic meters of water per day.
The project, whose feasibility was approved by the IAEA, will pave the way for the implementation of similar undertakings in the southern provinces to fight water scarcity in the area.
