Head of election monitoring committee in Algeria: no time to external monitors
Algeria, Politics, 4/1/1999
The head of national independent committee for monitoring presidential elections in Algeria, Mohammed Begawi said yesterday all the subcommittees that emerged from the committee in the municipalities and states are operational on a regular basis.
Answering a question on summoning international monitors for the April 15 presidential elections, Begawi stated that most of the Algerian parties opposed the idea of those monitors.
He added that even though some nominees wish to send for monitors, there is not enough time to contact international and regional organizations that require adequate periods of notification to take essential measures to individuals to monitor the elections.
