Joint measures to prevent fraud in Algerian presidential elections
Algeria, Politics, 3/31/1999
Four nominees for the presidential elections announced yesterday joint measures to stop electoral fraud.
They also decided on comprehensive obligatory coordination and pledged to avoid all actions contradicting Algerian laws. Vote buying, ballot forgery and intimidation of voters are against the law.
The four candidates are the head of the Socialist Forces Front, Hussein Ayett Ahmed; the head of the National Reform Movement, Abdullah Gaballah; former Foreign Minister Ahmed Taleb El-Ibrahimi; and former Prime Minister Mawload Hamroush.
Meanwhile, most of the nominees expressed their fears that there would be electoral forgery and that the administration would be biased in support of one of the nominees despite the assurances of current Algerian President Liamine Zeroual, Prime Minister Ismael Hamdany and Minister of Interior Abd El-Malek El-Salal.
The latter has asserted the need for establishing an effective monitoring system that would obstruct any forgery.
