Sudanese government denies near reconciliation with the opposition
Sudan, Politics, 3/31/1999

The deputy secretary general of the ruling National Congress in Sudan, Othman Abdul Qader Abdullatif, has denied reports of reaching a national reconciliation and political dialogue with the opposition.

In a statement he made on Tuesday in Khartoum, Othman said that the "preparatory committee which was assigned in the leading office of the conference has not yet drawn its conception of the reconciliation, its program or the political forces with whom the dialogue will be initiated, in line with the volume of its massive bases."

The Deputy secretary general of the national congress stated that the ruling party held its all conferences in five provinces which are al-Qadarif, North, Sinnar, the White Nile and Kassala. He added that the conference will continue after Eid al-Adha in the Red Sea province and then in the provinces of western Sudan.

He expected that the coming phase will witness intensive political moves for the congress, which decided to take part in the election of the provinces' council scheduled to be convened in the middle of April.

All parties registered in the frame of the political muitiplicity law had opposed the date set for the provinces councils elections and called for postponing these elections until they complete their internal structures, but the elections committee decided to abide by the set date of April 15.
