Djibouti: confrontation with the opposition
Djibouti, Politics, 3/31/1999
Djibouti radio said on Sunday that Djibouti used tear-gas to disperse the supporters of opposition candidate Mousa Ahmad Idrees who staged a protest demonstration towards the presidential palace in the capital.
The demonstration was decided upon suddenly at the conclusion of an electoral rally organized in the center of the capital. The opposition demonstrators intended to call for bringing to the country enough foreign observers to supervise the voting operations and to honor the transparency principle in the presidential elections due to be held on April 9.
The opposition calls for inviting observers to every voting center, saying that the 20 observers who are expected to reach the country are not enough for the elections to choose a successor for President Hassan Gouled Aptidon.
