African anti-terrorism draft agreement
Regional-OAU, Politics, 3/30/1999
The African draft agreement for combating terrorism was nearly finished by a sub-committee from the OAU (Organization of African Unity).
The project confirms the danger of this problem, stating that it threatens the security and stability of the African countries, and highlights the importance of all African countries endorsing the agreement taking the necessary measures to prevent international terrorism.
It calls for these nations to supervise and monitor their air, marine and land borders, as well as customs and immigration inspection sites, to frustrate attempts to sneak into their countries and to make sure when offering asylum that the candidate is not participating in any terrorist activity.
Furthermore, the draft agreement calls for arresting terrorist organizations and trying them according to national legislation or to hand them over according to this agreement's provisions.
Moreover, the draft agreement specified the fields of cooperation for combating and preventing terrorist acts, especially in the field of exchanging information concerning the activities of terrorist groups and any crimes they commit.
