Al-Sharaa in Tokyo
Syria-Japan, Politics, 3/25/1999

Syrian Foreign Minister Farouk al-Sharaa arrived in Tokyo for a three-day official visit to Japan, during which he will hold talks with his Japanese counterpart, the prime minister and the parliament speaker, as well as chairman of the foreign relations committee at the Japanese Parliament.

The FM will also meet with the chairman of the Syrian-Japanese Parliamentary Friendship Society.

Meanwhile, the Japanese Foreign Ministry announced that al-Sharaa' s talks in Tokyo will deal with exchanging views on bilateral relations and the Middle East peace process, the question of occupied south Lebanon, the Syrian track, regional issues and other key matters.

The Japanese Foreign Ministry added that the visit of the Syrian FM will eventually help develop bilateral relations between Syria and Japan, noting that Japan gives aid to Syrian economic projects in the context of joint cooperation between the two countries, especially as Syria plays a prominent role in the Middle East peace process.

Later in the day, Syrian Foreign Minister Farouk al-Sharaa on Wednesday met with Arab ambassadors in Tokyo. Talks dealt with the current Arab conditions and the need to reactivate joint Arab work.

Stress was laid on the importance of strengthening Arab-Japanese relations in all areas for the interests of the two sides.
