Israeli Cabinet studies plan to expand the city of Jerusalem
Israel, Politics, 3/25/1999

The Israeli Cabinet on Wednesday held its weekly meeting for the first time at the headquarters of Jerusalem municipality.

Israel Radio said the meeting which was presided over by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu dealt with the special plan relating to expanding the city of Jerusalem.

Israeli Health Minister Yahshou Matsa said that convening the Israeli Cabinet meeting at the headquarters of the municipality is a confirmation of Israel's determination to keep Jerusalem under its control.

Well-informed sources said that the Israeli Cabinet will agree to allocate some 300 million Israeli shekels to finance the operations to expand the city as approved by the municipality.

The Cabinet decided to specify 50 million dollars to improve the infrastructure in east Jerusalem at Jerusalem in which Palestinians reside.

Meanwhile, the Israeli Prime Minister announced that the Cabinet specified other amounts to build a large number of housing units in Jerusalem to contain the problem of overpopulation.

The eastern part of Jerusalem greatly suffers of weakness in its infrastructure, which is apparently noticed in comparison with the western part of the city while the Arabs there pay the same amount of duties and taxes.
