Pumping of Iraqi oil to Turkey suspended
Iraq-Turkey, Economics, 3/23/1999
An oil source in Baghdad said on Monday that pumping of crude oil to Turkey has been suspended following an explosion in Iraq that took place on Friday in the Turkish part of the oil pipeline between the two countries.
The same source added that pumping operations are suspended and that the Turkish side is working to repair the damage.
According to oil sources, the operations for loading oil containers in the Turkish port of Jeihan on the Mediterranean where the pipeline reaches was not affected by the explosion and that the containers are still being shipped.
44% of the Iraqi oil exports are currently made via this pipeline, which is 900 km long, between Karkouk oil fields and the Jeihan port, whereas remaining quantities of oil are exported via al-Baker port on the Arab Gulf.
