Understanding committee blames Israel for violations
Lebanon-Israel, Politics, 3/22/1999

Israel has threatened to escalate its aggressions against south Lebanon's villages and cities, especially the liberated city of Arnoun. It also warned of abrogating the April Understanding agreement and of suspending its participation in its meetings.

On Sunday, Israel Radio quoted an Israeli military source as saying that Israel will take all military measures needed and preserve what the radio described as Israel's right to implement a military operation against the town of Arnoun.

The Israeli military source also noted several question marks raised about the importance of the April Understanding.

Israel has recently carried out flagrantly aggressive acts against the town of Arnoun by demolishing three houses in the town, an act which violates the April Understanding agreement.

Meanwhile, the April Understanding monitoring committee has held Israel responsible for violating the items of the understanding by carrying out an attack against the towns of Zibqqin and Jibal al-Botoum in the western sector of south Lebanon.

Following a two-day meeting, the group stressed that the raid launched by Israeli warplanes against the towns has resulted in the injury of one Lebanese citizen and destroyed houses. The April Understanding committee also held Israel responsible for the destruction of houses in the town of Arnoun by the Israeli troops.

Further reports from south Lebanon said activists from the Israeli "Red Line" movement on Sunday demonstrated at one of the Israeli recruiting centers, and called for Israel's pullout from south Lebanon. An Israeli military source said the demonstrators carried banners calling for withdrawal from south Lebanon and submitted a protest document signed by families who accompanied them to the army centers.

Demonstrations were frequent months ago protesting Israel's occupation of south Lebanon. More than 1,200 Israelis have been killed in Lebanon since 1978.
