Report: Iraqi diplomat flees from India to the US
Iraq-India, Politics, 3/22/1999
The Indian daily "Hindustan Daily" said on Saturday that the second secretary at the Iraqi embassy in India, Muhammad al-Deni, recently fled to the US before ending his term of office in New Delhi.
AFP quoted the paper as saying that al-Deni fled after he left his house ten days earlier and he then phoned his embassy, asking the people there to hand over his service car, its keys and documents from his residence.
The US embassy in New Delhi denied any information on al-Deni fleeing to the US.
In this respect, the Iraqi embassy in New Delhi said that al-Deni, who has been working in the embassy for two years, is suffering from several health problems and that he disappeared on March 10, stressing that it knows nothing about the place where he may exist.
The spokesman for the Iraqi embassy said the disappearance of al-Deni, who left behind a big family and personal belongings, was a surprise, adding that, "Al-Deni was a good man and we do not know what happened to him."
