Syria, Economics, 3/22/1999
The United Arab Emirates' al-Bayan daily said that Syria will make economic changes to cope with the international situation, while adhering to Syrian principles.
The paper said there is a unanimous consensus that in the current phase which followed al-Assad's nomination for a new constitutional term, political decisions will be more courageous towards a "monitored openness," adding that Syria is facing various political, economic and military challenges.
The paper continued that Syria will witness changes in the political arena, which will be marked by convening the Baath Party's 14th conference and by dramatic changes in the structure of the economy, including openness on Iraq and association agreements with Europe.
