Columbian president hails Moroccans' solidarity move with earthquake victims
Morocco-Colombia, Politics, 3/20/1999
Columbian President Andres Pastrana hailed the Moroccans' solidarity move with his country following the earthquake that hit Columbia last January.
The Columbian president, who paid a 24-hour visit to Morocco during which he met with King Hassan II, said the aim of his visit was not only to establish and consolidate economic and political ties with Morocco but to convey, personally, in the name of the Columbian government and people, to King Hassan II, gratitude for the contribution, the assistance and the generous helping hand extended during the tragedy.
King Hassan II sent last March to Columbia $200,000 to rebuild a large part of a coffee-production region "El Eje Cafetero." A total of 742 persons died and some 3,200 were injured by the tremor that hit the South American country last January.
Regarding the content of his talks with the sovereign, he said they reviewed the ongoing peace process in his country, globalization and prospects for economic cooperation between the two countries. He added that Morocco represents a gate to Africa and has enormous potentials likely to enhance trade and exchanges with Columbia.
Regarding the Moroccan Sahara issue, Pastrana said his country supports the procedure and mechanisms set forth by the United Nations to peacefully resolve the issue, expressing confidence that it would lead to a solution that would satisfy the parties.
