Jordanian, Egyptian, Palestinian foreign ministers meet today
Regional-Palestine, Politics, 3/20/1999

Jordanian Foreign Minister Abd al-Ilah al-Khatib confirmed today that the trilateral Egyptian - Jordanian - Palestinian meeting which is to be held in Amman aims at enhancing the Palestinian negotiations in the current and coming stages of talks with Israel.

In a statement to Egypt's al-Ahram newspaper, al-Khatib said today that the three parties are going to discuss means of supporting the Palestinian position, adding that Jordan has some interests in the final status issues, including the refugees, the borders, security, Jerusalem and water.

On this, Palestinian chief negotiator Saeb Erekat confirmed that the three-way meeting is to discuss the outcome of Palestinian President Yasser Arafat's tour and the talks he held with European Union countries and other countries on declaring the Palestinian, which is to be established on May 4.

Erekat added in special statement to the Jordanian newspaper al-Arab al-Youm, published yesterday, that this meeting comes in order to coordinate and consult on the declaration of the Palestinian state, adding that some countries asked for delaying the state's declaration and that the issue is not about delaying or declaring the state or extending the transitional period, because it is more complicated than that this.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Amr Moussa confirmed that the Arab position is still steadfast on the declaration of the Palestinian state by May 4.

In declarations, after he received a delegation from the Norwegian Foreign Ministry yesterday evening, Moussa said he has tackled the date of proclaiming the Palestinian state with Norwegian officials and that Norway is playing a role in the peace process.
