Message from al-Assad to Mubarak
Syria-Regional, Politics, 3/19/1999

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on Thursday in Cairo received Syrian Foreign Minister Farouk al-Sharaa, who handed him a message from President Hafez al-Assad on consultations and exchanging views on current developments in the region and the peace process.

President Mubarak asked al-Sharaa to convey a reply to President al-Assad.

Al-Sharaa returned to Damascus later in the day on Thursday after he took part in the meetings of the Arab foreign ministers council.

During his presence in Cairo, al-Sharaa met with several Arab foreign ministers and presided over a meeting of the Arab foreign ministers who are members in the European-Mediterranean partnership, during which the Arab ministers agreed on the main issues to be reviewed during the Stuttgart conference in Germany in the middle of April.

Earlier in the day, a meeting was held at Arab League the headquarters which included al-Sharaa, the Egyptian foreign minister and the foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia and Qatar and the AL chief. During the meeting views were exchanged on several topics debated on the AL council agenda to bring Arab viewpoints together and to reach a common position toward them.

On the sidelines of the meeting, al-Sharaa met with his Iraqi counterpart, Muhammad Saeed al- Sahaf. Talks dealt with provisions listed on the agenda of the 111th council of the AL on the two "no-fly zones" over Iraq, the question of the prisoners and the missing and assigning the AL chief to follow up on these issues.

Talks also dealt with the Arab follow-up committee from the January consultative meeting, concerned with lifting the economic embargo imposed on Iraq and means of maintaining Iraq's cooperation with the committee to help it achieve its set mission.

Al-Sharaa also met with his Jordanian counterpart, Abd al-Ilah al-Khatib. Talks dealt with issues on meetings of the AL council. Bilateral relations between Syria and Jordan were reviewed.
