On today's meeting of the Arab foreign ministers in Cairo
Regional, Politics, 3/17/1999
A high-ranking diplomatic source in Cairo said on Tuesday that it is expected that the Arab Foreign ministers will not agree today on the four "mechanisms" known as the common Arab work mechanism, "the Arab court of justice, the code of honor for Arab security and cooperation, the AL mechanism to settle disputes and the project of the Arab federation."
The high-ranking source asserted that such an expectation is derived from the report of the AL secretary general, which will be submitted today to the meeting of the Arab foreign ministers on this issue, as the AL chief said that written letters were addressed earlier to the AL foreign ministers which had reservations on the constituents of the Arab court of justice: Tunisia, Iraq, Oman, Lebanon and Morocco.
The messages ask for lifting of these reservations so as the AL council will be able to approve the constituent of the Arab court for justice. However, the AL chief added in his report that he received reply messages from the foreign ministers of Tunisia, Oman and Morocco in which they showed the same previous reservations, which means practically their "non-approval of the court."
Moreover, Iraq is still conservative concerning the Arab code of honor and Syria and Iraq are also conservative over the mechanism of the AL to settle inter-Arab disputes.
