Inter-Arab reconciliation initiatives looms
Regional, Politics, 3/17/1999

Egyptian and Arab diplomatic sources told the Kuwaiti daily al-Rai on Tuesday that there is an Arab initiative in order to purify the Arab atmospheres, especially between Iraq and Kuwait and Saudi Arabia.

The sources added that this initiative is being made by Syria, Egypt and Yemen in order to be submitted to the meetings of the 111th session of the Arab League ministerial council, which will start its work in Cairo today.

The sources explained that contacts made by Damascus, Cairo and Sanaa with the Gulf states, especially Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, aim at opening a dialogue with Iraq in the context of crystallising an initiative for reconciliation so as to reach a common formula that will be conducive to eliminating the events of the Gulf War as well as to get an Iraqi promise not to repeat its invasion of Kuwait or any threat against its neighbors.

The sources asserted that the success of this initiative mainly depends on what Iraqi Foreign Minister Muhammad Saeed al-Sahaf carried of thoughts and authorities in this respect from his government.
