Iraq takes part along 18 foreign ministers at Arab League meeting
Regional, Politics, 3/16/1999

Some 18 Arab foreign ministers will take part in the meeting of the Arab League council due to start in Cairo tomorrow, including Iraqi Foreign Minister Muhammad Saeed al-Sahaf, who told the AL on Monday that he will participate and is committed to debating the question of the Iraqi and Kuwaiti missing on the session's agenda, which has 36 items.

A closed-door meeting will be held by the Arab foreign ministers, during which the meeting's agenda will be approved.

This session is expected to witness disputes concerning the Iraqi position toward the question of the missing and the Gulf reservations on the Iraqi request.

The AL ministers will also discuss the question of Lockerbie and a Libyan request calling on the Western states (in reference to Britain) to hand Arab terrorists to their countries and not to give them haven through political asylum.

The AL, on the other hand, drew up a draft statement rejecting the Iranian measures on three disputed Gulf islands. It voiced support for the peaceful solution to the dispute over the islands, including resorting to the International Court of Justice for arbitration.

Palestinian President Yasser Arafat is due to deliver an address before the meeting. Abdul Meguid confirmed that the Arab states will support the Palestinian leader in declaring their state in May and disclose Israel's hostile practices against the Palestinians.
