Moroccan higher legislative body moves to amend internal laws
Morocco, Politics, 3/15/1999

The Chamber of Advisors (upper house of the Moroccan parliament) is moving to amend its laws "to adapt the work of the chamber of advisors to that of the house of representatives" (lower house).

The advisors held recently a conference to assess activities in the fall session (that starts in October) and prospects for parliamentary actions, examine means of improving the chamber's actions and improve its role as regards law-making, control and parliamentary diplomacy.

Participants noted that the chamber adopted only a few laws in view of the limited number of draft laws submitted by the government and the slowness in debating the law proposals made by the advisors themselves.

The advisors decided to set a deadline for the study of draft laws and urged the committees to fulfill their part in the government control by examining topical issues in order to give new dynamism to dialogue between the government and the chamber.

The chamber also held on Sunday a plenary session to declare the opening of an extraordinary session of the parliament.

The other chamber of the parliament also convened a plenary session to start an extraordinary session.

King Hassan II, who chaired on Friday a ministers council, approved a decree to hold an extraordinary session of the two houses to examine two draft laws on privatization.
