Jordan rejects Israeli statements of less water to Jordan
Jordan-Israel, Politics, 3/15/1999
The director of Israel's water department, Meir Ben-Meir, told Jordanian officials that Israel is going to provide less water to Jordan under the pretext of low rainfall this past year. The Wadi Araba agreement provides for Israel to supply Jordan with water. Jordan opposed this Israeli decision.
Ben-Meir justified the Israeli decision by noting the reduction of the water level in the Yarmouk River and Tabria Lake, which are the most important resources for fresh water in Israel.
He said the Israeli government would not be able this year to supply Jordan's share of water according to the Wadi Araba agreement signed between the two countries in 1994, valued at 50 million square meters.
